Arrival and reception scenes in the epic tradition from Homer to Silius

François Ripoll

Résumé

Scenes of arrival and hospitality occur no less than four times in theIliad, and about twelve in theOdyssey, with several variations according to thepersonality of the host; in thenostosepic, they are endowed with a structuralfunction in order to draw a parallel between the Telemachy and Odysseus’ ownadventures and to prefigure the latter’s arrival at Ithaca. In theArgonauticaofApollonius Rhodius, most of the arrival scenes are cheerful, but brief; narrativeeffects concentrate on the epic’s main arrival scene, Jason’s arrival at the palace ofAeetes which contains a network of allusions to Homer’s Phaeacian episode. IntheAeneid, Vergil alludes both to Homer and Apollonius to create an atmosphereof uncertainty in the scene of Vergil’s arrival at Carthage, and surpasses Homer’sNestor in order to stress the theme ofpietasin the arrival at Pallanteum; these twoscenes are linked to one another by some echoes, parallels, and antitheses andalso to the receptions by Helenus and Latinus. Valerius puts a greater emphasison his arrival scenes than Apollonius, and accentuates the hosts’ sympathy forthe heroic community, except Aeetes. In Statius, arrival scenes are full of latentirony, either tragic (Thebaid) or humorous (Achilleid). In Silius, they are generallyassociated with moral themes:uoluptasandluxuria(Hannibal in Capua),pietaserga parentem(Serranus) orerga deos(Falernus). Latin poets generally strive toestablish connections, mostly throughekphraseisor symbolic objects, betweenthe past and present on the one hand and/or the present and future on the other.
